The problem we couldn't stop thinking about
In 2025, we kept seeing the same pattern across Shopify stores we audited: a meaningful share of revenue was coming from somewhere — but GA4 quietly labeled it "Unassigned." Operators couldn't tell whether their ads were working, whether their content was working, or which of the new AI channels were actually paying back.
The closer we looked, the more obvious it was. ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Meta AI, Google AI Overviews — every major AI engine was sending citations and clicks to Shopify stores. None of those channels existed in GA4's default channel grouping. Up to 48% of monthly revenue at one of our pilot stores was misclassified. Operators were optimizing in the dark.
