llms.txt: The Complete Guide for Shopify Stores (2026)
llms.txt is the new robots.txt for AI crawlers. Full implementation guide with ready-to-use templates for jewelry, apparel, supplements, beauty, and home goods stores — plus what to include, what to leave out, and how often to update.

llms.txt is a plain-text file placed at yourdomain.com/llms.txt. It gives AI crawlers — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini — a structured map of your site with priority pages, descriptions, and content summaries.
AI crawlers have token budgets. A 10,000-URL sitemap is useless to them. A well-written 200-line llms.txt tells them exactly what matters on your site and why. Stores that add llms.txt typically start appearing in AI citations within 2–4 weeks.
Most Shopify stores still don’t have one.
Why llms.txt Works
When ChatGPT or Perplexity crawls a site, they make decisions about what to index and how to describe it. Without llms.txt, they infer — and often infer wrong. Your homepage says “Affordable Luxury Jewelry” but ChatGPT describes your store as a “mid-price accessory shop.” That’s a brand signal problem llms.txt fixes in 10 minutes.
With llms.txt, you tell AI crawlers:
- What your store sells (precisely)
- What makes you different
- Which pages are most authoritative
- What your most important content is
- What to ignore (cart, checkout, tag pages)
The Format
The spec is from llmstxt.org. The format is simple Markdown:

That’s it. No special syntax beyond Markdown links and headings.

The goal is to surface your 20–40 most important pages, not your full sitemap. If a page has no meaningful citable content, leave it out.

How Often to Update
- Monthly when you add new key collection pages or major guides
- After any major content launch — new comparison page, new buying guide, new product category
- Quarterly — routine refresh to signal continued activity
A neglected llms.txt loses freshness signal fast. Even editing a single description paragraph tells AI crawlers the file is current.
Adding llms.txt to Shopify
Shopify doesn’t natively support arbitrary root-level files. Two options:
- Cloudflare Worker — serve
llms.txtat the root via an edge function. This is the cleanest solution with zero performance cost. - Shopify page redirect — create a page at
/pages/llms-txtwith a custom template that serves plain text, then add a URL redirect from/llms.txtto it.
